Here we are talking colour, weight, glossy or matt even card or paper. This largely depends on two factors i) what you have to sell and ii) how much you are willing to spend.

1. Budget Paper – this is of course thin and fairly rough paper and will quickly deteriorate if exposed to the elements, but it is cheap and may allow you to maximise the number of flyers you can produce, thereby potentially reaching the widest audience. However, this quality of paper is really only suitable for Event flyers which just provide information of “What, Where & When” in this case the quality of the paper will not give a negative impression of the quality of the event. If you are selling a high quality product or service it is imperative that you don’t devalue it with a cheap flyer.
2. Special Coloured Paper – again for event flyers a brightly coloured paper can make your flyer more arresting
3. Durable Paper – If your flyer needs to last as it is not advertising a single event which will come and go in a week or so, you will need a thicker more durable paper. These will of course be more expensive but will make them last longer and enable more flexibility in the way that you use them, whether that be on car windshields, indoor and outdoor notice boards or even in flyer dispensers.
4. Quality High Gloss – If your flyer is advertising a high quality product or service, you should plant the impression of quality in the minds of your audience by using a high quality gloss paper or card with superior images. Clearly this is the most expensive option, but if it persuades potential consumers that yours is a quality enterprise worth doing business with, it will be money well spent.

Your choice of paper and in particular its thickness vastly affects the image of your business. Using a heavier weight adds style to the overall effect and often enables a better print quality.

If you regularly use flyers, try to keep the theme consistent. If you advertise a lot it's very important to make sure that your brand is recognisable, if you change colours and fonts each time you run a new campaign people wont make the connection that it is the same business.

People tend to choose a brand that they recognise over one that they don't find familiar.

However fantastic your finished flyer is, if it ends up in the bin it is useless. Make sure that you give your target a reason to keep it and more importantly, act upon it. Include a promotional voucher or a chance to win a prize from a draw.

People are far more likely to take up your offer if you include all the details.

Give them prices, location, times, dates and of course contact details.

If you decide to have your fliers delivered to homes, you should plan and target the areas you deliver to. Just as there is little point in delivering flyers selling swimming pool construction to high rise flats, so too it would be a waste to deliver flyers promoting sheep dip to city estates. Moreover if you are paying an agent to deliver them for you, it would be wise to check that the flyers have actually been delivered to your target area and not just deposited in the local recycling unit. It should also be remembered that by delivering them yourself, you often get the chance to speak to your target audience face to face.
